She Travels Bilingual

Bilingual Cloud Hooray! Finally it’s here, it still needs a little work here and there and I also need to translate a lot of old posts, but She Travels is now bilingual. So if you prefer to read in Dutch, you now can. How cool is that?!

Of course there is a reason why I went the bilingual route. I noticed that people close to me found it a bit difficult to read in English but really wanted to know what I was writing about. And because I also have a lot of friends and family abroad, who don’t understand much of my Dutch ramblings and also want to know what I write about, I didn’t have much of a choice.

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays It’s that time again, the end of the year is near and before we dive head first into the new year we throw another party; Christmas. We’re confronted with it months before and it seems that every year it has to be prettier, better and more expensive.

For me the holidays are mostly a family gettogether. A time I can sit around the table with my family to talk, play board games and eat. Luckily my loved ones don’t buy into the whole prettier, better and more expensive thing, we celebrate in our own way; you’re crazy enough if you act normal, and we just love being happily together.

However you celebrate this holiday season, I just want to wish you happy holidays!

Pony Tales

For as long as I can remember I grew up around horses. We always had horses around the house and I got to know how to take care of them at a very young age. My dad and granddad taught me all I know about taking care of them, cleaning stables, grooming the horses and just enjoying their company.

Over the years I’ve seen happy horses, sick horses and had to let one of my biggest friends go. She taught me a lot and I still miss her at times, I sometimes walk into the stables half and half expecting her to greet me as soon as I walk in, but I know that will never happen again.

Luckily for me I still have two of her friends to take care of. I’m very grateful to have my two horses in my life and have them located so close to home. Unfortunately one of them, my little friend Dribbel, got sick a few weeks ago. He wasn’t walking properly and although it didn’t seem too severe yet, the vet was called in to check on him. She told me she was suspecting him of having cushing, along with laminitis. The conclusion of laminitis didn’t really surprise me, I recognised it in the way he was walking and standing (the reason the vet was called in, laminitis is not innocent)

Dribbel

Cushing

Little Dribbel was tested for cushing through a blood test, and he tested positive for it. Cushing is caused by overproduction of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) by the pituitary gland. In horses it results in numerous symptoms including laminitis. There is medication to treat cushing, the only thing is horses have to continue to take it, it’s not a matter of a few weeks, but a lifetime. It also takes about 6 to 8 weeks for the medicine to start working. Once the cushing is under control it’s easier to treat the laminitis. He’s now on this medicine and hopefully in a few weeks we will really start to see results.

Laminitis

Like I mentioned before, laminitis is not that innocent. It can be caused by many things, including being overweight and getting too much high nutritious food, but also by cushing. Dribbel’s laminitis is caused by his cushing and once under control he will always be very vunerable to get it again. Laminitis can even cause death, something I’d rather not think about.

Where Dribbel was walking and standing a bit funny in the beginning, his laminitis has gotten progressively worse over the past week. The vet has been out a few times over the past week to check on him and to give him more painkillers to keep him comfortable but last Thursday he was bad, very bad. So I called the vet in again and she confirmed what I thought; his laminits has gotten extremely worse. She suggested to have x-rays taken to see if his coffin bones in his hoofs have been sinking. Once they have sunken down in his hoof they can’t be placed in the right position again. They could even end up penetrating the hoof if untreated.

Yesterday the mobile x-ray unit came to our stables to have Dribbel’s x-rays done, only to reveal what I feared; both his coffin bones have sunk. I’m happy our vets are honest and said they see an option for him to be treated and continue on his merry way, yet at the same time they also let me know that there is a possibility he might not make it through, that I have yet again let one of my friends go.

Right now I don’t even want to think about that last option, We’re going for his treatment 110% and try to look on the positive side of things (as far as there is one). Currently he’s on painkillers for his laminitis, and of course his cushing medicine. Since the start of his latest prescription of painkillers I can see a huge difference, he’s more comfortable walking around albeit still not as he should be but how can he with his sunken coffin bones. I’m just very pleased to see he’s alert, eating, walking and even playing the occasional joke on his humans.

Apart from all his medicine the farrier will be here this week to work on his hoofs to change the way he stands on them. By changing the way he stands we can hopefully bring back the position of the coffin bones closer to how they are supposed to be; parallel to the hoof walls. This takes time as they can’t do it on one go. So hopefully in time both the cushing medicine and the farrier’s work will give a positive result a pain free happy horse…

For now I’m focussing on all the positive there is and hope he pulls through, I really don’t want to have to miss my little friend. He’s such a little rascal making me laugh every day. I hope to be able to be the pun of his jokes for a long time to come.

New Look: Pink Is The New Green

You might have had to blink a few times when you opened the site, because it’s pink! I think it needed a little overhaul and this is what it turned in to. Now that the days are getting shorter and the dark days before Christmas are upon us, I thought it would be nice to kick in with some colour.

Pink

Usually I’m not one for pink, but messing around with some colour schemes my eye caught a few bright pink roses on some fabric I have stored near my sewing machine and I liked it. At first I wanted to pair it up with a blue colour but it didn’t turn out as I had envisioned.

Then I came across this background pattern and the yellow came in. It’s a bold and funky combination and to be honest it had to grow on me. But now that I’ve been staring at it for a few days, I like it. In fact, looking at it makes me smile. And we all know you can never smile enough! I guess it just fits my hippie outlook on life, or it reminds me of my flower power days from when I was still in college… ah the younger days 😉

I hope you all like it too! I’m really looking forward to hear what you think. And of course, as much as I tried to code everything properly, there might still be some things that need to be worked on. So if you come across anything like that, don’t hesitate to let me know, I’d appreciate it.

Invisable Changes

There are also some changes you can’t see. A while ago I posted about changing hosts and how I already transferred my domains out. Well, while I was writing that post I was already in the process of moving everything. The move has been done and despite the fact that I was worried about closing my old hosting account due to very negative reviews online, everything went well.

So here I am, all fresh with a new look and a new host. It seems the changing bug is going around the internet right now as everyone is changing their designs left and right (and they’re gorgeous!). It might not all be perfect yet here on She Travels but remember;

Resources

Colours Used Because I think credit needs to go where it’s due, here are my resources. The background comes from PixelsAndIceCream, the fonts used are Polo, Underwood Champion, Julee and The Skinny. The colour scheme used is shown on the left, my social media icons are made by Pixeden and the paper plane in the header is drawn up by me (after staring at a few drawings of paper planes, turns out it’s not that hard to draw..)

Without further ado, what do you think?!

Prague: Imagine an Anti-Communism Protest

Imagine booking a hostel and receiving an email right after your booking confirmation to warn you about the city, from the same hostel! Surely it was very kind of them to send us an email to warn us to keep our valuables hidden (or not take them into the city at all) and to be aware of pickpockets and other scammers. Yet at the same time it had me a bit more weary about Prague than it deserves.

We arrived at our hostel right around dinner time, we were hungry and tired from travelling all day from Salzburg to Prague. To our surprise we were greeted with a nice warm dinner, for free! The hostel organises free dinners a few times a week for their guests and we happen to arrive on such a day. Lucky us! We even got to eat and fill our rumbling tummies before checking in. Now that’s a big two thumbs up.

After settling in to our room (with no room mates for our whole stay, win!) we made our way down to the bar to try us some Czech beer. Lots of beer for cheap, what’s wrong with that? The bar was covered with writings on the wall and country flags, New Zealand and The Netherlands represented of course!
Being tired after such a long day of travel on not very comfortable trains we finished our beers and headed up to our room for an early night.

Anti-Communism Protest

The next day we headed in to the old city of Prague. That’s the most beautiful part of the city. A lot of old buildings have been fantastically restored to the way they looked in their glory days. This part of the city also seems a lot cleaner than the rest of Prague we’ve seen, but maybe that’s because this is the most touristy part and it has to look inviting?

View of Castle Prague

Crossing one of the many bridges to make our way up to the castle we looked to our right to the Charles bridge. A very beautiful bridge made out of Bohemian sandstone. It is protected by 3 bridge towers and has a lot of statues all along the bridge. A magnificent sight, which was unfortunately diminished by a very large purple finger, contaminating the view.

Little did we know the finger was not only our topic of conversation. Sarah and I were discussing the reason for the finger and how it made the view a little less attractive (and made it impossible to take proper photos without the finger showing up), when I turned around and found a microphone under my nose and a camera in my face. Brilliant, a camera crew for Czech TV. I was immediately asked about the finger, if I knew what it represented, why it was there and my feelings on communism and protesting. Thinking up the most politically correct answer I could in 3 seconds I got away as fast as I could, and I sincerely hope I didn’t end up on Czech TV.

Charles Bridge

After my 5 seconds of fame we made our way up to the Castle giving us a stunning view of the city while walking through the castle gardens. We had to walk up a lot of steps to get up there but it was absolutely worth it. Ironically enough you have to go down some more steps to get to the garden but I can really recommend doing so because the gardens are amazing, even in fall.

Imagine

The one thing I really wanted to see in Prague was the John Lennon wall. Since the 1980’s  this once normal wall has been filled with John Lennon inspired graffiti as well as Beatles song lyrics. In 1988 the wall was used by young Czechs to write their grievance on and it became a source of irritation for the communist regime. The wall has been painted over many times and the original portraits have been lost under numerous layers of paint. These days the wall represents a symbol of ideals like love and peace.

Imagine

As you can see the wall has a lot of graffiti on it, and a lot of the lyrics and portraits are gone. I think it’s very unfortunate that most of the graffiti on it has nothing to do with the ideals of love and peace but are just spray painted names and phrases not connected to the Beatles, John Lennon or what the wall stands for these days.

The wall is located near the Charles bridge and although there are no signs (at least that I saw) you just find the John Lennon pub and it’s right across from there.

John Lennon Bar Prague

A long day of walking around the city exploring made these backpackers very hungry (Bratwurst for lunch is good though!) and we were looking forward to dinner. The hostel staff recommended restaurant Lavicka Zahradni to us, good food for a decent price. It was close to the hostel so it was an easy choice.

The food was perfect. It was absolutely delicious and well prepared. We both ate for around €20,- a person and that included a main course, a dessert and wine or cocktails. How’s that for cheap?! The cocktails I drank were the best I had this trip and prepared with real ingredients rather than syrup. If you’re in Prague, keep this place in mind. It’s not in old town, but located in the opposite direction about 20 minutes walk from the main train station. They have a tram stop practically in front of their door too and the trams go from old town straight there so no need to walk if you don’t want to!

Cocktail Time

Prague is definitely worth visiting, it’s a lot cheaper than most other cities in Europe (actually the whole of Czech Republic is) and it makes for an ideal city to spend a weekend in.
